It also helps plan ready-mix concrete quantities and concrete by the bag after the required volume is known. The core calculation is volume, but a practical order should account for unit conversion, uneven subgrade, excavation variation, spillage, and waste. Measure each section carefully, calculate complex projects as separate shapes, and add a project-appropriate allowance before ordering.
For a rectangular placement, volume equals length × width × thickness. When dimensions are entered in feet, divide cubic feet by 27 to calculate cubic yards of concrete. Circular placements use V = πr²h. The same volume method works for a concrete footing, fence-post hole, pier, column, slab, or other formed placement: model the placement with the appropriate shape, total the sections, then convert the result to the supplier's ordering unit. Ready-mix concrete is normally ordered by the cubic yard in the United States, while smaller projects are often planned by the number of concrete bags required.
Treat the calculated cubic yards as the theoretical minimum. A clean, accurately formed slab may need about 5% extra, while footings, trenches, rough excavation, pumping, or difficult access may justify 8–12%. For bagged concrete, use the manufacturer's stated yield for the exact bag size and mix rather than assuming every 60 lb or 80 lb bag produces the same volume. For ready-mix concrete, confirm truck capacity, minimum-order rules, short-load fees, and the supplier's accepted ordering increment.
Worked examples
Concrete slab in cubic yards
A garage slab is 24 ft long, 20 ft wide, and 4 in thick.
- Convert thickness: 4 in ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft
- Volume = 24 × 20 × 0.333 ≈ 160 cubic ft
- Cubic yards = 160 ÷ 27 ≈ 5.93 yd³
- Add 7% waste: 5.93 × 1.07 ≈ 6.35 yd³
Result: Plan on approximately 6.5 cubic yards of ready-mix concrete, subject to supplier increments and site conditions.
Concrete for a footing
A continuous footing is 60 ft long, 18 in wide, and 8 in deep.
- Convert width: 18 in ÷ 12 = 1.5 ft
- Convert depth: 8 in ÷ 12 = 0.667 ft
- Volume = 60 × 1.5 × 0.667 ≈ 60 cubic ft
- Cubic yards = 60 ÷ 27 ≈ 2.22 yd³
Result: With a 10% field allowance, the concrete footing requires about 2.45 cubic yards.
Concrete for fence posts
For multiple fence-post holes, calculate the volume of one cylindrical hole and multiply by the number of posts, subtracting post displacement only when it is significant for the project.
- Measure the hole diameter and depth rather than relying only on nominal auger size.
- Use the cylindrical volume formula V = πr²h for one hole.
- Multiply by the total number of equivalent holes.
- Convert the total to cubic yards or use the bag manufacturer's yield to estimate bags.
Result: This method provides a project-specific fence-post concrete estimate instead of using a fixed bags-per-post assumption.
