Worked examples

Concrete slab in cubic yards

A garage slab is 24 ft long, 20 ft wide, and 4 in thick.

  1. Convert thickness: 4 in ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft
  2. Volume = 24 × 20 × 0.333 ≈ 160 cubic ft
  3. Cubic yards = 160 ÷ 27 ≈ 5.93 yd³
  4. Add 7% waste: 5.93 × 1.07 ≈ 6.35 yd³

Result: Plan on approximately 6.5 cubic yards of ready-mix concrete, subject to supplier increments and site conditions.

Concrete for a footing

A continuous footing is 60 ft long, 18 in wide, and 8 in deep.

  1. Convert width: 18 in ÷ 12 = 1.5 ft
  2. Convert depth: 8 in ÷ 12 = 0.667 ft
  3. Volume = 60 × 1.5 × 0.667 ≈ 60 cubic ft
  4. Cubic yards = 60 ÷ 27 ≈ 2.22 yd³

Result: With a 10% field allowance, the concrete footing requires about 2.45 cubic yards.

Concrete for fence posts

For multiple fence-post holes, calculate the volume of one cylindrical hole and multiply by the number of posts, subtracting post displacement only when it is significant for the project.

  1. Measure the hole diameter and depth rather than relying only on nominal auger size.
  2. Use the cylindrical volume formula V = πr²h for one hole.
  3. Multiply by the total number of equivalent holes.
  4. Convert the total to cubic yards or use the bag manufacturer's yield to estimate bags.

Result: This method provides a project-specific fence-post concrete estimate instead of using a fixed bags-per-post assumption.
